10 Tips for Successful Presentations in English

Tense and nervous are probably the two words that best describe how you feel when you are about to face an English presentation, tips are often needed to do so.

Even though I am used to presenting in English, that feeling still keeps coming and gets bigger as the D-day approaches.

1. Pay attention to details

English presentations certainly require more approaches and adaptations than Indonesian language presentations.

One of them, you need to pay attention to presentation details such as location, equipment, and materials that will be presented long before the presentation takes place.

When you know the details well, you’ll be more comfortable and less nervous.

2. Opening sentence

In a presentation using English, the stages in making a presentation are of course very closely considered in as much detail as possible.

Therefore, the basic tips when making an English presentation, it’s a good idea not to forget to use the opening sentence.

The opening sentences that are commonly used when making presentations in English are as follows:

“Good Morning, Thank you for coming to this. An honor to meet you here.”
Assalamualaikum Wr. Wb. I would like to say thank you for coming to my presentation. It’s great to see you all.”
“Good Morning, Ladies and gentlemen. I’m glad to see you all.”

3. Introduce yourself

After delivering the opening sentence, the next presentation tip using English is to introduce yourself.

Literally, this is clearly very important considering that the audience must know who they are going to discuss with.

This self-introduction section applies not only to yourself, but can also be done when you are giving a presentation in a group.

Examples of self-introduction sentences that can be imitated:

“Let me introduce myself. My name is Farkhan, and I am from Jakarta.”
“Okay, Let me introduce myself and my partner. I am Febri Dwi Cahya and my partner Is Rahmat Mulyana, We are from XYZ Company.”

4. Convey an outline

When delivering a presentation, don’t forget to convey the outline or agenda.

This is also a crucial part of an English presentation because the audience naturally wants to know what you are going to convey.

The presentation of the outline and agenda must be interesting and catchy. Some sentences that you can use to convey an outline are:

“I’d like to give you a brief outline of my presentation…”
“Here is the agenda for the meeting…”
“My presentation consists of the following parts…”

5. Purpose and intent of the presentation

After you do the introductions, you can proceed to the next stage, namely explaining the purpose and intent of the presentation.

Submission of the intent and purpose of this presentation is useful in order to assist the audience in understanding roughly what the subject matter will be discussed.

How easy is it to deliver?

“The purpose of the presentation is…”
“Please look at the picture. okay? Can you see the picture? What do you see in the picture? Nice, we will continue to find out what is going on there.”

6. Present the presentation material

Reporting from the British Council, always use simple and easy-to-understand language.

Avoid speaking too fast because this will cause the audience to be unable to understand your idea.

This stage is the most important stage that you have to run as best you can. Then, in order to deliver a good presentation, you are expected to keep practicing.

Don’t forget to use a confident expression and stay calm during the presentation.

Using transitional sentences, such as: “First, I will explain to you about how to read the book. Then, I will explain why reading the book is so important for us. Finally, you will know how to read the book“.
Using words that show a reason, comparison, or result, for example: because, since, however, although, and in addition.

7. Make sure data in presentation are easy to understand

If you want to present data in the form of numbers or results of analysis, use graphs or diagrams to make it easier to understand.

ILAC mentions that displaying data using graphs and charts will be more interesting and meaningful.

Some sentences that you can use are:

“The pie chart divided into several parts”
“The numbers have remained stable”
“Here are some facts and figures about the analysis
